Evidence of Native American settlement in Oklahoma has been unearthed by archaeologists that date back to more than 11,000 years ago. Oklahoma was graned statehood in 1907 and economy gained a boost with the discovery of oil in 1920s. But it reached a slump with the Depression and soil erosion which prompted many ‘Okies’ to migrate west on the ‘Mother Road’ to find a better living. Oklahoma is situated in the western south-central US and ranks 18th in size among the 50 states.
The total area of Oklahoma is 69,956 sq mi (181,186 sq km), of which land comprises of 68,655 sq mi (177,817 sq km) and inland water 1,301 sq mi (3,369 sq km). Oklahoma is surrounded on the North by Colorado and Kansas; on the East by Missouri and Arkansas; on the South and SouthWest by Texas; and on the extreme West by New Mexico.
