Lawton is located in Southwest Oklahoma, in Comanche County, 90 miles southwest of Oklahoma City on Interstate 44. Lawton is the third largest city in Oklahoma covering a total area of 194.6 km² (75.1 mi²), all land. The city was named after Maj. Gen. Henry W. Lawton, Civil War Medal of Honor recipient, killed in action during the Spanish-American War, Battle of San Mateo, Philippines. The average January temperature is 44 degrees while the avergae July temperature is 81 degrees F.
